Midea supports the University of Malta, reshaping sustainable education space

With its leading HVAC technology and one-stop HVAC solutions, Midea Building Technologies (MBT) has successfully created a sustainable, innovative, and student-centered educational space for the University of Malta, improving the energy efficiency and comfort of Malta’s educational facilities and setting a new benchmark for sustainable and intelligent educational facilities in Europe.

People-oriented, creating a greener and smarter learning space

The project mainly includes two landmark facilities: one is to create a comprehensive educational ecosystem for the Mediterranean College of Sports, which consists of 28 classrooms, multi-functional sports facilities, training camps and student dormitories; the other is to provide energy-saving and sustainable solutions to meet the needs of the Sustainable Living Complex, which covers a total area of 11,000 square meters. Midea provides an integrated solution covering 25 Aqua thermal chillers, 100 heat recovery ventilation units., 400 fan coil units., 600 V8 VRF indoor units, 80 V8 VRF outdoor units, and 4 MARS R290 heat pumps, fully realizing multiple advantages such as energy saving and efficiency, high sustainability and user comfort.

In terms of energy efficiency and sustainability, relying on the application of V8 inverter technology and Aqua thermal chillers, the system can dynamically adjust its operation according to the occupancy rate, accurately match the cooling and heating needs, and significantly reduce energy consumption and operating costs; in addition, with the help of IMM PRO software and gateway system, centralized management, remote adjustment, and preventive maintenance are realized, further improving operational efficiency and reliability. At the beginning of the design, Midea made comfort a priority. Through the heat recovery ventilation system and HVAC system, Midea ensured the stability of the indoor climate and the user’s comfortable experience.

The project design strictly follows the EU’s F-Gas Regulation and Energy Efficiency Directive, and meets Eurovent and LEED standards, ensuring that Midea’s system supports the sustainable development and environmental responsibility goals of Malta and the EU.

Mediterranean Sports Institute : Overcoming space and climate challenges

In the Mediterranean Sports Institute, Midea faced the dual challenges of limited building space and Malta’s hot climate. At the same time, Charlo Bonnici, CEO of the institute, pointed out that energy efficiency has always been the primary consideration when planning this large-scale project. In response, Midea applied the V8 VRF system and MARS R290 heat pump to achieve stable operation at high temperatures and ultra-high energy efficiency. Among them, the V8 VRF system, with its excellent temperature control capabilities, realizes precise temperature control of different areas such as classrooms, dormitories, and multi-functional sports facilities, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment all year round; the MARS R290 heat pump uses R290 environmentally friendly refrigerant and passes various environmental tests with high standards. It leads the industry in both ultra-high temperature hot water performance and low-carbon environmental protection. Lina Hoyos, project manager of Midea’s official partner in Malta, said: “The durability of the V8 VRF system is crucial for Malta’s climatic conditions. ”

Sustainable Living Complex: Leading the way in sustainable building practices

The core of the Sustainable Living Complex project at the University of Malta is to create a comprehensive space with sustainable living at the core. “This project focused on high sustainability, precise temperature control, and excellent air quality. We chose Midea because its solutions accurately meet these needs,” said Surrenderan Amsarat. Lina Hoyos pointed out that Midea’s system can monitor energy performance in detail and provide the key data needed to meet sustainable development standards.

In this project, Aqua thermal chillers were installed on a large scale for the first time in Europe, helping Malta stand at the forefront of sustainable building practices and environmental innovation. Midea worked closely with the local partner during the design and installation phases, and the engineering teams of both sides worked closely together to ensure that each technical deployment could be accurately connected with the overall system.

It is worth mentioning that the HVAC system in this project has also become a practical learning tool for engineering students, providing them with opportunities to practice industry-leading sustainable technologies. This “live laboratory” model not only helps to cultivate industry talents but also inspires the implementation of similar projects across Europe and promotes the formulation of sustainable policie.

Setting a benchmark for sustainable smart education

This project is an important manifestation of Malta’s commitment to a greener and smarter future, setting a new benchmark for sustainable smart education facilities in Europe. As the main investor in the project, PIO Vassallo, CEO of Vassallo Group, highly praised the long-term partnership with Midea: “In the past nine years, we have cooperated with Midea in many projects. From the operating efficiency of the products to the implementation of the projects and even the after-sales service stage, Midea has always performed excellently .”

As Europe’s requirements on carbon neutrality goals and energy efficiency become increasingly stringent, MBT will further promote the innovation of intelligent green building solutions, optimize energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, support more sustainable building practices, and help the sustainable development of green buildings and environmental protection, leading the industry towards a smarter and greener future.
