At COP29, Midea Building Technologies shared the outcomes of the 2011 UNDP R22 phase-out project, showcasing its success in reducing ozone-depleting substances (ODPs). The company also provided an in-depth overview of its latest developments in climate change mitigation, focusing on the key advantages and energy efficiency of its R290 heat pump solutions. The R290 refrigerant has a low Global Warming Potential (GWP), making it both more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Through continuous innovation, Midea has developed a range of R290-based heat pumps that offer high efficiency, low emissions, and reliable performance even in low-temperature environments—reinforcing its strong commitment to carbon reduction and green solutions. The Nature Series ATW Heat Pump and Mars Large Series Commercial Heat Pump both utilize R290 refrigerant, achieving A+++ energy efficiency ratings. The Nature series, designed for residential use, combines ultra-quiet operation with high-efficiency heating in extreme cold conditions, making it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking comfort and performance. The Nature Series ATW Heat Pump also earned the world’s first cold-resistant certification from Intertek. When paired with Midea’s iEasyEnergy energy management system, this heat pump further enhances overall energy efficiency and user experience. The system integrates flexible algorithms and dual-storage technology to optimize the management of household devices, enabling energy self-sufficiency of up to 90%. On the commercial side, the Mars Large Series Commercial Heat Pump offers high-performance solutions for both cooling and heating in large spaces, with outstanding high-temperature water output and heating power to meet the demands of industrial applications. Midea’s R290 heat pump solutions provide a safe, eco-friendly, and high-efficiency industry alternative that aligns with global climate action initiatives, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability across sectors.
Following the presentation, the Secretariat hosted a panel involving key stakeholders in governments and industry, focusing on the safety standards for R290 refrigerant and its practical applications in developing countries. The consensus was clear: the future lies in high-efficiency cooling and heating, especially when integrated with renewable energy sources.
As an industry leader, Midea Building Technologies is dedicated to delivering smart, efficient, and sustainable building solutions. With advanced technologies and exceptional quality, Midea has earned widespread recognition across the globe.
In recent years, Midea has made significant progress in driving green development and responding to global climate change with real, impactful actions. In particular, Midea’s high-efficiency chiller plant solutions have played a key role in the green transformation of large buildings. One notable example is the Citigroup Tower project, which has become an industry benchmark for decarbonization. The project improved energy efficiency from 1.0 W/W to over 5.5 W/W, cutting operating costs by over 40%. This reduction is equivalent to a decrease of more than 2,600 tons of carbon emissions annually, making a meaningful contribution to efforts to mitigate global warming.
Looking ahead, Midea plans to continue its investment in the research and development of green technologies, furthering its commitment to global sustainability goals. The company’s participation in COP29 not only showcased its cutting-edge technology and expertise in green refrigeration but also presented new ideas and solutions for tackling climate change. With high-quality products and services, Midea will continue to lead the industry toward a more sustainable future.
