In Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, a multi-functional sports complex accommodating over 10,000 spectators has quickly become a new urban icon. Since opening, the venue has hosted numerous international events, including the European Basketball Championship. According to MEP engineer Shalva Kapanadze, the facility was constructed to rigorous European standards with state-of-the-art technology, marking a major leap forward for Georgia’s sports infrastructure.

During the project’s early stages, Midea Building Technologies (MBT) distinguished itself in a highly competitive international bidding process. Leveraging its advanced and energy-efficient heat pump solutions, MBT  ensured the project was delivered on schedule. The system has now operated reliably for three consecutive years, setting a new standard for sustainable HVAC systems in Georgia’s large-scale sports venues.

Navigating Extreme Climate and Tight Deadlines

Tbilisi faces significant seasonal temperature swings, from scorching summers reaching 38°C to winters approaching 0°C—posing strict requirements for HVAC reliability and stability. As the main venue for the 2022 European Basketball Championship, the project also faced unprecedented delivery pressures, with construction and system installation timelines compressed to the minimum.

“This project was one of the most challenging engineering undertakings in Georgia’s recent history,” said Giorgi Agladze, Head of Product Development for the project. “The original HVAC design was incomplete, which required agile, real-time decision-making and continuous system optimization throughout the project to meet world-class sporting standards.”

To overcome these complexities, MBT proposed a comprehensive heat pump solution to replace the traditional boilers. This approach fundamentally optimized the venue’s energy structure while significantly improving system stability and operational efficiency.

The project ultimately deployed 13 Midea air-cooled scroll chillers, delivering both heating and cooling with a capacity of up to 460kW. The system maintains stable operation across a wide ambient temperature range from -15°C to 48°C. Its modular design allowed for parallel installation and independent operation of each unit, simplifying system integration and significantly reducing installation time.

The solution utilizes R410A eco-friendly refrigerant, with zero ozone depletion potential, contributing to carbon reduction goals and ensuring compliance with global sustainability standards. In addition, MBT ’s intelligent control system automatically adjusts operation based on real-time building load, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing lifecycle costs. Sustainability was embedded not only in technology selection but also in system operations, ensuring the project delivers long-term environmental and economic value.

Localized Support for Efficient Delivery and Long-Term Service

Throughout the project, MBT implemented a localized rapid-response strategy, drawing on local inventory to quickly supply critical components, such as fan coil units, thereby minimizing logistics time. The technical team remained on-site weekly, providing hands-on support to resolve installation challenges and ensure smooth project execution.

MBT also provided comprehensive after-sales services, including full training for the venue’s technical staff on system operation and maintenance. A five-year warranty was offered, along with annual complimentary system inspections, ensuring long-term stable performance and peace of mind for facility managers.
